Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marine survey?

A marine survey is a detailed inspection of a vessel's structural integrity, systems, and safety equipment. It provides a snapshot of the boat's condition and value, similar to a home inspection but for boats.

Why do I need a marine survey?

Most insurance companies and financial institutions require a survey (usually a Condition & Valuation report) to underwrite a policy or approve a loan. For buyers, a Pre-Purchase survey is critical to uncover hidden issues before you buy.

How long does the inspection take?

A typical survey takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the size, complexity, and condition of the vessel. We take the time needed to be thorough.

Do I need to be present?

While not strictly required, we highly recommend you attend, especially towards the end of the survey. It's a great opportunity to learn about your new boat's systems and ask questions.

How should I prepare my boat?

Please ensure the boat is accessible and clean. Clear out unnecessary gear from lockers and bilges so we can inspect the hull structure. If a sea trial is planned, the engine should be operational.

When will I get my report?

You will typically receive your comprehensive PDF report within 24 to 48 hours after the inspection is complete.

What does a survey cost?

Our rates are competitive: $28/ft for Pre-Purchase Surveys and $22/ft for Insurance Surveys. Please contact us for a specific quote based on your vessel.

What if the weather is bad?

We can often perform the interior and systems inspection in light rain, but heavy weather or snow may require rescheduling for safety and accuracy, especially for deck and hull inspections.

Do you survey engines?

We perform a visual inspection of the engines and run them during a sea trial (if applicable) to check for proper operation, temperature, and oil pressure. However, a detailed mechanical survey (compression tests, oil analysis) should be performed by a certified marine mechanic.
